Our Mission

Public safety information in Illinois is scattered across dozens of agencies, portals, and databases — most of them difficult to navigate, slow to update, and impossible to search across simultaneously. IllinoisCrime.com exists to fix that.

We pull from the Chicago Police Department's open data portal, the Illinois State Police Uniform Crime Report, CourtListener's federal court database, and eight continuously monitored news feeds. We normalize, contextualize, and present that data in a format that is useful to a concerned parent, a defense attorney, a journalist on deadline, and a city council member preparing for a budget hearing — all at the same time.

We do not sensationalize. We do not fabricate. We do not editorialize about individual defendants. We report what the data says, cite every source, and let readers draw their own conclusions.

"The public has a right to know what is happening in their communities. That right is not served by data that is 18 months old, buried in a PDF, or requires a FOIA request to access."

Editorial Standards

IllinoisCrime.com operates under the following editorial principles:

Source Every StatisticEvery number on this site has a source citation. If we cannot cite a government agency or court record, we do not publish the number. See our full Methodology page for data source details.
No Fabricated DataWe do not estimate, extrapolate, or fabricate crime statistics. Where official data is unavailable or delayed, we display the most recent published figures and clearly label the data year.
Defendants Are Presumed InnocentArrest and charge information is published as a matter of public record. An arrest is not a conviction. We do not characterize defendants as guilty prior to adjudication.
Corrections PolicyErrors are corrected promptly and transparently. If you believe a statistic or fact on this site is incorrect, email us at [email protected]. We investigate every correction request.
No Political AffiliationIllinoisCrime.com is not affiliated with any political party, candidate, law enforcement union, or advocacy organization. We report data. We do not advocate for policy positions.
Privacy ConsiderationsWe publish information that is already part of the public record. We do not publish home addresses of private individuals, information about juvenile offenders, or victim information beyond what is in official public records.

Who We Are

IllinoisCrime.com is operated by an independent team of Illinois journalists, data researchers, and public safety analysts. We are not affiliated with any law enforcement agency, government body, court system, or political organization.

Our team has backgrounds in investigative journalism, criminal justice data analysis, and Illinois court reporting. We built this platform because we were frustrated by the same problem every Illinois journalist and researcher faces: the data exists, but it's scattered, delayed, and inaccessible to the public in any useful form.

IllinoisCrime.com is based in Illinois. We cover all 102 Illinois counties.

Note on anonymity: Members of our team operate under editorial pseudonyms consistent with the practice of many investigative crime reporting outlets. This is a standard practice in crime journalism to protect reporters from retaliation. Our editorial standards, data sourcing, and correction policies are fully transparent and documented on our Methodology page.
