Corrections Policy

We make mistakes. When we do, we correct them transparently and promptly.

IllinoisCrime.com is committed to accuracy. When we publish information that is wrong — whether a factual error, a misidentification, an outdated record, or a calculation mistake — we correct it. This page explains how our corrections process works.

Report an error

Found something wrong? Email us the URL and a description of the error. You do not need documentation to submit — we will investigate.

What qualifies as a material error

A material error is any factual inaccuracy that could mislead a reader about a person, event, or data point. This includes: incorrect names or identifying information; inaccurate descriptions of charges, verdicts, or case status; errors in statistics or safety scores; outdated records where the underlying facts have changed (charges dropped, case dismissed, conviction overturned). Differences of interpretation, editorial judgment calls, or matters of opinion are not corrections — they are disagreements, and we handle those separately.

How to report an error

Email corrections@illinoiscrime.com with the URL of the page containing the error, a description of what is incorrect, and — if you have it — documentation supporting the correct information. You do not need to provide documentation to submit a correction request; we will investigate regardless. You may also use the 'Report an error' link at the bottom of any content page.

How we handle correction requests

Every correction request is reviewed by an editor. We investigate the claim against our source material. If we confirm an error, we correct the record and add a visible correction note to the affected page explaining what was changed and when. We do not silently alter published content. If we determine the original reporting was accurate, we respond to the requestor explaining our conclusion.

Correction notes

When a material correction is made to a published page, a correction note appears at the top of that page. The note states what was corrected and the date of the correction. We do not remove correction notes after they are added. The original incorrect text is not preserved — we correct the record and note that a correction was made.

Records about named individuals

If you are named in a booking record, court filing, or most-wanted listing on this site and believe the information is inaccurate or outdated — for example, charges were dropped, a case was dismissed, or a conviction was overturned — contact us at corrections@illinoiscrime.com with documentation. We will review the record and update it if the underlying facts have changed. We do not remove accurate public records on request, but we do update them when the facts change.

Data corrections

Safety scores, rankings, and statistical analyses are recalculated when source data is updated or when we identify a calculation error. When a data correction materially changes a published score or ranking, we note the change on the affected page.
